Notes from the Jurassic Park chronology

This episode takes place shortly before the beginning of Jurassic World.

Didja Know?

Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous is a CG-animated TV series that aired on the Netflix streaming service from 2020-2022 for five seasons and one special. While the first couple of episodes take place before and during the events of Jurassic World, the rest of them take place shortly after that film, and about three years before the events of Fallen Kingdom. Netflix is currently producing episodes of a sequel series, Jurassic World: Chaos Theory, whose first season began in May 2024.

Each episode of the series opens with the words "A Netflix Original Series" over what appears to be a T. rex footprint in the jungle mud.

The Universal Pictures logo that appears after this is altered from the usual to have the Earth globe with a continent that looks very roughly like the supercontinent Pangaea may have looked in the Triassic-Jurassic periods of the Mesozoic era, 200-150 million years ago.

As the Universal Earth globe spins, a second "continent" seen is actually a stylized DreamWorks Pictures logo (a boy sitting with a fishing pole on the crescent Moon), followed by the Amblin Entertainment logo.

The dinosaur that bursts out of the Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous gates at the beginning of the opening titles of each episode is a Tyrannosaurus rex, possibly the infamous Rexy herself, but we don't see its right side close enough to see if it has Rexy's raptor scars incurred in Jurassic Park. Rexy does appear throughout the series, though.

This episode has the same title as the series itself, "Camp Cretaceous". Later episodes have unique titles.

Didja Notice?

The Jurassic World radar computer screen at the beginning of the episode has nonsense symbols for text along the sides of the radar image. A couple minutes into the episode, the viewer will come to realize that they have been seeing a Jurassic World virtual reality game being played, not events in the physical world of the series.

At 2:48 on the DVD, the posters on the walls of Darius' bedroom appear to be of Brachiosaurus, Velociraptor, and an unidentifiable ceratopsian (it looks closest to Styracosaurus, but has eight spikes on its neck shield, where Styracosaurus is accepted to have just 4-6). Seconds later, Parasaurolophus, Centrosaurus, and Pteranodon posters are seen, as well as Pteranodon models hanging from the ceiling, and a Mr. DNA (the cartoon mascot seen in Jurassic Park and Jurassic World) poster.

At 4:19 on the DVD, the clock next to the photo of Darius and his dad has what appears to be the face of a Compsognathus (compy). The stuffed animal dino on the other side is an unidentified sauropod. The painting propped up behind the father/son photograph looks as if it may be a children's paint-by-numbers oil painting.

The necklace Darius likes to wear is made from a raptor tooth (as later identified in "Things Fall Apart").

The dinosaur model seen at 4:31 is a Parasaurolophus, followed by a Tyrannosaurus rex, a Pteranodon, and a stegosaur.

At 4:52 on the DVD, a poster of Isla Nublar is seen.

The book Darius grabs off his bookshelf to help him defeat the raptors in the virtual reality game is partially identified as "of the Dinosaurs". The novelization of the episode reveals that it is The Lost World of the Dinosaurs by Dr. Alan Grant. This was the name of the book by Grant that Tim Murphy carried around with him on Isla Nublar in Michael Crichton's original novel of Jurassic Park.

The helicopter that rescues the player in the VR game appears to be a rather customized version of a Bell 407. Kenji's helicopter also appears to be the same kind of custom 407, with a black paint job.

When Darius beats the game, Mr. DNA appears onscreen, congratulating him and telling him he's won a free trip to Camp Cretaceous. The cartoon character is here voiced by voice actor Jeff Bergman. In Jurassic Park, the character was voiced by Greg Burson, and in Jurassic World by that film's director, Colin Trevorrow.

Head Councilor Roxie pulls up to the pier to meet the kid campers in a Jeep-like vehicle with six wheels (the novelization refers to it as a 6x4). It appears to be a custom-designed CG vehicle for the series, meant to look similar to the omnipresent Jeeps in the Jurassic Park/World movies. The front grill of the vehicle has the Jurassic World symbol on it.

Notice that the main gate of Camp Cretaceous has four dinosaurs carved into the wood. They appear to be, clockwise from top left: Pteranodon, possibly Centrosaurus (not Triceratops due to the frill on its neck shield), Brachiosaurus and Mosasaurus.

Arriving at their treehouse quarters, the kids witness a large number of dinosaurs being herded below them. The dinos seen are Brachiosaurus, Parasaurolophus, Stegosaurus, Ankylosaurus, and Sinoceratops.

The raptor encountered by Kenji and Darius at the end of the episode is Blue, who will feature prominently in Jurassic World and several subsequent stories. Presumably, the other three raptors seen here are her pack seen and killed in Jurassic World, Delta, Echo, and Charlie.
